The Fall is a British rock band formed in Manchester in 1976 by the charismatic and prolific Mark E. Smith (vocals), Tony Friel (bass) and Martin Bramah (guitar). Their style, heavily influenced by punk rock, krautrock music and literature, has evolved over the years to incorporate elements of post-punk, indie rock and electronica.
With a large number of musicians involved in the band’s formation, the one constant was Mark E. Smith, who remained at the helm until his death in 2018. The band was particularly prolific, with over 30 studio albums to their credit, including such notable works as ‘Hex Enduction Hour’ (1982) and ‘This Nation’s Saving Grace’ (1985).
The Fall’s reputation is based on their experimental sound, incisive lyrics and Smith’s unpredictable attitude. Despite their lack of major commercial success, The Fall have influenced many bands and artists and remain an iconic figure in British alternative rock.
