A total discovery for me, here is a duo I had never heard of. That's part of the charm of this project. The Louvin Brothers were an American country music duo, formed by brothers Ira and Charlie Louvin. They were known for their vocal harmonies and gospel-inspired style of music. The duo was active in the 1950s and 1960s and recorded several albums that were very popular. The Louvin Brothers have also influenced many country and folk artists, and their work continues to be appreciated by fans of traditional music.

The Louvin Brothers recorded “Tragic Songs of Life” in 1956. This album includes several songs that were very popular at the time, including In The Pines and The Knoxville Girl. The songs on this album are mainly sad ballads that deal with themes of death, separation and loss. The mood is one of joy and good humour. The album was well received by critics and was considered to be one of the best works of The Louvin Brothers.

In The Pines

In the Pines is a traditional American song from the Appalachian miner's culture that was first recorded in the 1890s. It is also known as Where Did You Sleep Last Night? or Black Girl. The song became popular in Appalachia and has been covered by many country, bluegrass, folk, and rock artists.

In the pines, in the pines, where the sun never shines
And you shiver when the cold wind blows
Little girl, little girl, what have i done
Thats made you treat me so

The song is about a man who discovers that his wife or girlfriend has left their home to live with another man. He goes into the woods to find her and beg her to come back, but he can't find her. He wonders where she spent the night and worries about her. Some interpret the song as a story of jealousy and loss of love, while others see it as a story of loneliness and despair.

covered and adapted this song in their MTV Unplugged album with the alternative title Where Did You Sleep Last Night.
