Formed in Scotland in 1983, The Jesus and Mary Chain are an alternative rock band led by brothers Jim and William Reid. Their distinctive sound blends pop melody with white noise distortion, creating a dark, ripped aesthetic that was crucial to the development of shoegaze and noise pop.
Their debut album, “Psychocandy” (1985), is an alternative rock classic, fusing Beach Boys-esque melodies with walls of noisy guitars. Tracks like “Just Like Honey” and “Never Understand” cemented their status as an innovative and influential band.
Despite critical success, the band was often overshadowed by internal tensions and problems with their label. This led to a period of inactivity in the mid-90s, although the Reid brothers continued to record under different names.
The band reformed in 2007, and have since played numerous festivals and released new material, including the 2017 album ‘Damage and Joy’. Despite their tumultuous career, The Jesus and Mary Chain’s impact on alternative music remains undeniable.
