The Monks were an avant-garde rock band formed in 1964 in Germany by five American soldiers, Gary Burger (vocals, guitar), Larry Clark (organ), Dave Day (guitar, banjo), Karl Remy (bass) and Roger Johnston (drums). The Monks stand out for their atypical appearance, with shaved heads and black cassocks, as well as for their innovative sound, mixing garage rock and proto-punk.
Their only album, ‘Black Monk Time’ (1966), gained a cult following thanks to such iconic tracks as ‘Complication’ and ‘Monk Time’. Despite their brief career and break-up in 1967, The Monks left an indelible mark on rock history, inspiring many artists and bands of the following decades.
The Monks reunited several times in the 1990s and 2000s, playing concerts and recording new songs. Their enduring influence and cult status maintain them as an important figure in experimental rock.
