Brian Wilson, born June 20, 1942 in Hawthorne, California, is an American musician, singer, songwriter and producer, best known as the founding member and creative leader of the Beach Boys. A true musical genius, Wilson revolutionised 1960s pop with his innovative approach to writing, arranging and producing.
With the Beach Boys, he co-wrote and produced an impressive string of hits such as “Surfin’ USA”, “I Get Around”, “Help Me, Rhonda” and “California Girls”. In 1966, Wilson reached the pinnacle of his art with the album “Pet Sounds”, considered one of the best albums of all time, and the song “Good Vibrations”.
However, Wilson’s career was marked by personal challenges, including battling depression, drug addiction and mental illness. He stepped away from the Beach Boys on several occasions to focus on his health and solo career. His solo achievements include the album “Brian Wilson” (1988) and the unfinished project “SMiLE”, finally released in 2004 as “Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE”.
Despite the ups and downs, Wilson has been honoured for his contribution to music with numerous awards, including a Grammy and inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Beach Boys. Today, Brian Wilson is considered a pioneer and living legend of pop music, whose influence is still felt.
