Roger McGuinn is an American musician and folk-rock pioneer, born on 13 July 1942 in Chicago. The iconic leader of the Byrds in the 1960s, he is best known for his mastery of the 12-string Rickenbacker guitar, which defined the band’s jingle-jangle sound.
With the Byrds, he turned Bob Dylan folk songs into pop hits, such as “Mr. Tambourine Man”. After the Byrds disbanded in 1973, McGuinn pursued a quiet but respected solo career.
He is renowned for his commitment to preserving traditional folk music. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.
