The Ramones, formed in New York in 1974, are one of the most influential punk rock bands in history. With members such as Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee and Tommy Ramone, the band is famous for its fast, raw and direct style that revolutionised rock music.
The 1976 self-titled album, “Ramones”, is often cited as the first punk album. With songs like “Blitzkrieg Bop” and “I Wanna Be Sedated”, the Ramones offered an antithesis to the pompous rock of the time, advocating a return to simplicity and raw energy.
Despite their impact, the Ramones were never commercially successful. Internal tensions and personal problems also marked their career, culminating in the band’s break-up in 1996.
However, their influence is undeniable. They paved the way for countless punk bands and played a key role in the emergence of the punk rock movement in both the US and the UK. Despite their absence, the Ramones’ legacy continues to be celebrated, with posthumous recognition and continued influence on rock music.
