Formed in Manchester in 1983, The Stone Roses are one of the most iconic bands of the British indie scene. Comprising Ian Brown (vocals), John Squire (guitar), Mani (bass) and Reni (drums), the band is often associated with the Madchester scene and the baggy movement of the late 80s and early 90s.
Their self-titled debut album, released in 1989, is a psychedelic pop masterpiece, blending jangly guitars, dance grooves and lyrical lyrics. The album, which includes classics such as ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ and ‘Waterfall’, is widely recognised as one of the best British albums of all time.
Despite their initial success, conflicts with their label and internal tensions hampered the band’s career. Their second album, ‘Second Coming’ (1994), received mixed reviews and failed to repeat the success of their first effort.
After their break-up in 1996, The Stone Roses reformed in 2011 for a series of sold-out concerts. Despite rumours of a new album, the band broke up again in 2017.
Despite a short and tumultuous career, The Stone Roses’ legacy is undeniable. Their unique blend of rock and dance continues to influence generations of musicians and their debut album remains a cornerstone of indie rock.
