Billie Holiday (1915-1959) was an American jazz singer considered one of the greatest voices of the 20th century.
She began her career at the age of 16 singing in jazz clubs in Harlem, New York. Holiday worked with some of the greatest jazz musicians of her time, including Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Lester Young. She recorded such iconic songs as “Strange Fruit”, “God Bless the Child” and “Lover Man”.
Holiday was known for her unique voice, sense of rhythm and emotional interpretation of lyrics, as well as her personal style of phrasing. She was also known for her influence on civil rights and her support of the social justice movements of her time. Tragically, she died at the age of 44 from cirrhosis of the liver.
